Podcast Viewfinder Ep. 42: Walmart, Man bun, and #OscarsSoWhite

In this week’s indelible ep. we talk about how not to get a job at Walmart, the importance of influence, and our take on the Oscar debacle. As always it’s funny (well we think so) and hopefully will make you think about how you view the world around you. ¬†Thanks for listening!

  • On the subject of the Oscars. The problem with the Oscars is that it is already an incredible subjective process. There is no objectivity when it comes to what is the best movie or the best musical score or best actor. Because of this, I consider the Oscars a joke in general. Thus I don’t care if the Oscars are more diverse or less.

On the subject of white privilege. I can not deny that white privilege exists in some degree; however I do not know empirically what level that white privilege exists. The example the speaker in your course gave could have been improved if she had instead said that checker looks at you and says they can help you next instead of the black person who was clearly there first.

On the subject of preventing institutional prejudices. It might sound frustrating but preventing institutional prejudices has no magic bullet solution that I am aware of at this moment. However, I do believe that a proper well rounded education helps people understand the problem better and work to fix it or remove it. Trying to increase the level of education for the general population is not something that a person can do on an individual level unfortunately.
